The General Lee made its debut in 1979 on the television show
The Dukes of Hazzard, starring Tom Wopat and John Schneider.
The show is the story about a family of reformed moon shiners
who spent more time running from the sheriff than racing their
car, General Lee, on the track.  The most memorable scenes from
this show are the chases through the countryside with nearly
impossible car jumps across rivers and gorges.
The 1969 Dodge Charger was loaded with
a 440 cubic-inch Magnum V8 engine.  The
375 horsepower engine with a top speed of
135 MPH and 0-60 in 5.4 seconds enabled
the Charger to live up to its name.  The
Charger’s Hemi Orange paint was flanked
with the number 01 on the doors and the
rebel flag on the roof.  During production
of the TV series, more than 300 Chargers
were used. This car is one of the
surviving 17 original  television General
Lees when the show ended in 1985.
Although Bo and Luke Duke were the main characters, General Lee
became, and still is, the star of The Dukes of Hazzard.
